Portable Appliances Testing (PAT Testing) - In service inspection and testing of electrical appliances

The term 'portable appliance testing' is somewhat misleading because this category of electrical equipment testing includes large stationary items such as freezers, washing machines etc. and includes any electrical equipment that is not permanently connected/fixed to the electrical supply, i.e. it is connected to the mains via a plug. There are 4 main categories of equipment identified (under the IET Code of Practice for in service inspection and testing of electrical equipment) that should be routinely PAT tested:

  1. Hand held appliances - include items such as hair dryers, electric drills.
  2. Portable appliances - electrical equipment weighing less than 18kg that can be moved whilst being used or can be easily moved, eg. vacuum cleaners, food mixers, toasters.
  3. Moveable equipment - this equipment is transportable rather than portable and includes items such as electric fires, air conditioning units.
  4. Stationary equipment -items that weigh more than 18kg, that are not hard wired into the mains, eg. chest freezers, washing machines.

There are also other types of equipment (such as extension leads, I.T. equipment etc.) that do not readily fall into the above categories, but which still require routine inspection and testing. Our state of the art PAT Testing equipment is capable of testing all of the above types of electrical appliances, whether they be standard 230v, 110v or three phase. The IET are to issue new codes of practice in 2008, which expands the scope of portable appliance testing to include some fixed electrical appliances such as warm air hand dryers.

Our Procedure for PAT Testing

Carried out by City and Guilds qualified PAT testing engineers in accordance with IET Codes of Practice for in service inspection and testing of portable electrical appliances, our PAT testing service is of an excellent standard and our prices are extremely competitive. The following inspection and testing methods are used by our engineers when PAT testing electrical appliances:

  • Full Visual Inspection - The appliance is checked to ensure that it is not damaged, the flex is also examined for signs of damage, the mains plug is also examined to ensure that the flex is properly secured, the fuse rating is correct, the wiring is correct, that there are no signs of overheating and no cracks to the plug's casing.
  • Earth Continuity (earth bond) Test - this test is applied to Class I appliances to ensure that the appliance is adequately earthed. Special soft tests are used on I.T equipment.
  • Insulation Resistance Test - Used to test both Class I and Class II electrical appliances, a current of 500v DC is applied to measure resistance which should be greater than 1.0Mohm for Class I appliances or greater than 2.0Mohm for Class II appliances.
  • Substitute Leakage Test - A gentler version of insulation resitance testing, used on appliances with voltage limiting devices.
  • Touch Leakage Test - Used to measure protective conductor current between earth and live parts in class I appliances or from live parts to the appliance enclosure for Class II appliances.
  • Polarity Test - This test checks that there are no crossed wires.
  • Load Test or Functional Test - To confirm that the appliance operates.

Each appliance tested is labelled for easy identification, showing when it was tested and when re-testing is required. Every electrical appliance tested is fully recorded on the most up to date test equipment, for later transfer to fully documented test reports, which include: a unique appliance I.D number (that corresponds with the appliance label I.D number), appliance description, date of test, fully itemised test results. Your test results and PAT Testing certification are neatly presented in a folder for easy reference and safe keeping. Click here to view a sample pat testing report page.

We are fully insured to the value of £5m (copies of our insurance details are available to new clients).
